Derek proposed to Katie on January 22, 2016 in Atlanta. On a rooftop. Later surrounded by their friends and family. Ohh yeah, and it was snowing.

It couldn't get any better, right? Wrong.  

Only three days later, Derek got a text from a younger fraternity brother asking him if anyone had a crush on Katie in Fall 2009. Super bizarre. But the reasoning was pretty legitimate, they had just found a love letter addressed to Katie in a Fall 2009 Mechanical Engineering notebook. "Are you sure it's my Katie?" "Yes, he used her last name." Convincing enough.

Derek had no idea who it could be, and it quickly became a comical and intriguing story. He requested a picture of the letter. At this point he had Katie in on it as well, and they both waited anxiously for the text. It came. Clear as day, it was

Derek's handwriting.

Well not that clear, Derek has terrible handwriting. But they were able to decipher it, and sure enough it was a full blown love letter that Derek wrote to Katie (but never gave her) two years before they started dating. He always knew.

Just for a slightly added cuteness factor, Derek also wrote Katie a letter to read after he proposed. Her attributes he listed for being the reasons he loved her were more or less the ones he wrote in the first letter. If only they had found it sooner.
